Project Management for Software Development Projects
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Sadhana Deshpande is an experienced Project Manager and Researcher in Software
Engineering. Her current research focus is on Global Software Development, Outsourcing
and Offshoring of software projects, Management of Offshore-Outsource software projects,
Software Quality and Business Process Modeling.
She is Co-founder of Vision Computer Consultants, a software company based in India
specializing in project management, software development, training and consulting. She is
associated with Indian software industry over last 20 years.
Dr. Deshpande has developed an expert validated process model ‘GSD-COORD’ for
management of software projects. This model has extended the PMBOK® Guide framework
to propose a better management of global software development projects.
She was awarded PhD by University of Limerick, Ireland in January 2013. She holds Master
of Business administration (MBA) and Master in Computer Management (MCM) degrees
from University of Pune, India along with Bachelor of Science (BSc) from Marathwada
University, India.
Prior to moving to Sweden Dr. Deshpande was associated with Lero-Irish Software
Engineering Research Centre, University of Limerick, Ireland where she was working on
European Union (EU) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded software engineering
research projects.
Summary
Today, outsourcing and offshoring of software development projects and functioning with
globally distributed teams has become increasingly common in software industry.
However, the major issue that subsists is the management of Global Software Development
(GSD) projects because the software development teams need to align and coordinate over
temporal differences to work competently with each other. A practical approach that needs
to be followed is to incorporate appropriate techniques and strategies to overcome various
issues that impede management of software projects. In this talk, Dr. Deshpande will
discuss how PMBOK® Guide supports management of global software development
projects besides collocated projects. Also, how various tools and techniques from the
PMBOK® Guide in particular are best suitable for global software development
environment.
Dr. Deshpande will further discuss how in comparison to other standards such as ISO and
CMMI the tools and techniques from PMBOK® Guide have helped to develop an expert
validated process model ‘GSD-COORD’ for global software project management. This model
has extended the PMBOK® Guide framework to propose a better approach for management
of software projects. She will present few processes from the GSD-COORD model that are
derived from PMBOK® Guide to demonstrate how the model can be tailored to suit global
and collocated organizational settings. She will also demonstrate how project managers can
take a holistic approach to implement different strategies and best practices from these
processes to contemplate both the client and vendor perspective for software project
management.
