The elephants, rhinos and cheetahs wandering the plains of Kenya are beautiful—and a major revenue source. Tourism fuels 8% of the nation’s GDP, but poaching, #ClimateChange and a human population boom are putting the country’s iconic wildlife at risk. In response, three government agencies launched the National Wildlife Census, counting thousands of species from the air, on land and at sea. “Before we didn’t know about numbers of [some of] these species. Now we know what we have and where they are,” says Wildlife Research and Training Institute’s Patrick Omondi, PhD.
